I have been a regular playing at Word of Mouth since soon after it opened about 4 years ago. In October, Simon Sheldon and Plan B / The Freebooter Lounge crew from Belfast took over Word of Mouth for the weekend.

First impressions for me – what a joyous group they were. Not only did they nearly drink the bar dry but there were all super friendly and patient with the overrun staff. Later it occurred to me that for many of the visitors who had not been to Ibiza before, this was a great way to get to know they place. Arriving as a group, it means you are no longer newbie visitors but part of a crew of friends and familiar faces would be present all weekend. If you don’t know you way around the island it can be confusing knowing where to go, but coming with such a large informal group means there will be people on hand with more experience to point you the right direction. You can then head off to discover hidden beaches, country walks or fine dining with the option to return and touch base with the group at any time during the weekend. I had a private gig on during Saturday but arrived at WOM on Sunday afternoon to find the place rammed with the human dynamo that is DJ Venus leaping about and conducting the audience in a joyous bouncing set.

Later that afternoon, Simon’s band Visions Of Light performed a live set. Of course I am familiar with much of their studio music, but I had forgotten how powerful electronic dub can be when played at volume in a live setting. And what better setting than against the Santa Eulalia bay with the deep dub resting on the breeze. I can’t wait to welcome them all back and for everyone’s sake, I hope that this gentle invasion from the Emerald Isle will become an annual occurrence.
